What does a Roll & Ride driver do?
You drive wheelchair accessible vehicles across Greater Melbourne, taking NDIS participants, seniors and people with limited mobility to appointments, work, day programs and social outings. It is not ordinary rideshare work. You operate a hydraulic lift, secure a wheelchair with four-point restraints, and help people at both ends of the trip. Most of our drivers say the difference is that passengers know them by name.
Why drive with us
- Steady, repeat work. Much of our work is regular travel — the same therapy run, day program or dialysis appointment each week — so your schedule is predictable rather than feast or famine.
- Own vehicle or ours. Bring your own wheelchair accessible vehicle, or drive one of ours.
- Bookings come to you. We handle the phones, the bookings and the invoicing, including NDIS plan managers. You drive.
- Paid lifting fee. Wheelchair accessible vehicle drivers are paid a lifting fee under the Victorian Multi Purpose Taxi Program, on top of the fare.
- Flexible hours. We operate 24/7. Mornings, school hours, evenings or weekends — tell us what suits.
- Training provided. Lift operation, restraint fitting and assisting passengers safely, whatever your starting point.
What you need
You do not need all of these on day one. Tell us where you're up to and we'll explain what's missing and how to get it.
| Requirement | Needed |
|---|---|
| Full Australian driver licence (not a probationary or learner permit) | Before you start |
| Commercial Passenger Vehicle (CPV) driver accreditation with Safe Transport Victoria | Before you start — we'll walk you through applying |
| National police check | Before you start |
| Working with Children Check | Before you start |
| NDIS Worker Screening Check | Before you start |
| Wheelchair accessible vehicle | Only if you're driving your own |
| Experience with wheelchairs, hoists or disability support | Helpful, not essential — we train |
CPV driver accreditation is issued by Safe Transport Victoria and is a legal requirement for anyone driving passengers commercially in Victoria. Details at safetransport.vic.gov.au.
Who this suits
The drivers who last with us tend to be patient, unhurried people who are comfortable helping someone in and out of a vehicle and don't rush a passenger who needs an extra minute. Many come from aged care, disability support or nursing. Others come from taxi and rideshare and want work that feels less anonymous.
If you get impatient in traffic or want to maximise trips per hour, this isn't the right fit — and that's worth knowing before you apply.
How hiring works

- Paperwork and checks. We confirm your accreditation and screening, and help with anything outstanding.
- Vehicle familiarisation. Lift operation, restraints and assisting passengers, so you start confident.
- First shifts. You start with regular runs so you learn the passengers and the routes.
